As a reminder, in the previous article we traveled to Gilan Province in northern Iran and became familiar with the city of Rasht and the beautiful nature of this province. In this article, we pay a visit to Anzali Port, continuing our journey in the beautiful province of Gilan.
Anzali is one of the most important ports in northern Iran, which is bound to sea from three sides and leads to land from one side. It covers an area of almost 40 square kilometers and is situated on the southwestern coastlines of the Caspian Sea. It is located 35 kilometers from the city of Rasht and 380 kilometers from the city of Tehran.
This region maintains a moderate and humid climate and its weather is under the influence of the Caspian Sea and Alborz altitudes, like other regions that lie on the northern coastal belt of the Caspian Sea. Meanwhile, the Gulf of Anzali is a safe location for the berthing of ships, fishing, and establishing commercial ties with Caspian Sea littoral states, and has played a pivotal role in development of Anzali Port, turning this port into an important harbor in northern Iran.
Anzali Port has established bonds with a number of Central Asian countries and is of paramount importance due to its proximity with Iran’s highly populous regions and commercial and industrial hubs. In fact, this port is in touch with the harbors, situated on the northern coastlines of the Caspian Sea, and is linked to the commercial and international harbors of a number of European countries through the Black Sea. Hence, Anzali Port is also known as the Gateway to Europe.
The main activities of residents of Anzali Port are fishing, farming, and producing handicrafts. In the agricultural domain, they maintain paddy fields and breed silk worms. They are also engaged in producing straw mats, fishing nets, and different wooden tools as the most important handicrafts of this region. Anzali Port is also one of the most important centers for production of boats.
The tourist attraction sites of Anzali include “Miaan Poshteh” Palace, “Saa’at” Tower, and the lighthouse. Among the cultural and educational institutions of Anzali Port, the Naval Faculty is of major importance.
The “Miaan Poshteh” Palace was built in 1933. It has 11 rooms and a common room and maintains a unique and beautiful façade. This palace is currently a military museum, which has placed different types of weapons from the Safavid era up to this day on public display.
Meanwhile, “Saa’at” Tower dates back to 1815 AD. Its height is 28 meters and is in fact a lighthouse, which can be seen across the Anzali coastal belt and within the sea.
This lighthouse was built during the reign of Qajarid King, Naser Ed-Din Shah, for guidance of sailors, by the then local ruler, Khosrow Khan Gorji. In the year 1928, this tower was renovated and a clock was placed over it which works to this day following its repair in the year 1990.
Anzali marshland is also another tourist attraction site of Gilan Province, which lies on the southern coastlines of the Caspian Sea and is situated in the proximity of Anzali city. The intact nature, waterways covered with bamboos and lotus, the sound of birds, surrounding villages and small islands have made Anzali marshland into one of the most beautiful tourist attraction sites of the region.
Marshland is a location in which rainfalls, and water currents of springs and rivers accumulate and turn stagnant. Almost 6% of Earth is covered with marshlands, which play a major environmental role. In fact, marshlands play roles in moderation of climates, regulation of flood currents, prevention of erosion of soil, and protection of biological diversity. They also play crucial roles in feeding underground water sources and are considered as the habitats of birds.
Anzali marshland is covered with bamboos and shallow waters. According to law; hunting, fishing, cutting trees, and many other activities that harm the environment are strictly forbidden in this region.
Anzali Marshland has been registered at Raamsar Convention among the global marshlands. According to Raamsar Convention, which is one of the most important conventions aimed at protection of marshlands, the world countries have been obliged to protect their valuable marshlands through mutual cooperation.
Anzali Marshland is of significant importance in the ecological and environmental domains and plays a crucial role in the regional geography and regional social, economic, cultural, and political Iife.
This marshland has long played a pivotal role in the shaping of human communities in its surrounding regions, and regional economy, while the plants of this marshland have long been used to feed the livestock. The unique nature of this marshland has always attracted the eco-tourists.
Anzali marshland has played an important scientific role in the domains of zoology, botany, and environmental studies; and researchers use this marshland as a free of charge, natural laboratory in different realms. The fish species of this marshland have been an important food source for the locals and play a decisive role in regional economy. In fact, a number of fish species are only found at Anzali marshland.
Anzali marshland is one of the most appropriate habitats for different types of migrating birds. Dozens of types of birds choose Anzali marshland as their winter quarters. In fact, every year, migrating birds such as goose, swans, and ducks temporarily reside on the surroundings of this marshland.
Among the different plants that grow at Anzali marshland, lotus flowers maintain a unique beauty. The beautiful leaves of lotus flowers have in fact covered the surface of this marshland, creating a unique scene.
