Iran favors broader ties with neighbors

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says his administration attaches paramount significance to the promotion of friendly and amicable ties with neighboring countries.
Speaking at a Friday press conference in New York after the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Meeting on Cooperation for the Rule of Law at the International Level, Rouhani stated that he had held discussions with representatives from Iran’s neighboring countries about mutual trust, the expansion of economic, cultural and tourism ties as well as the resolution of existing differences on the sidelines of the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly.
He also pointed to the tourism ties that Iran has with Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bahrain, and Oman.
Rouhani said, “Such relations with Saudi Arabia and Iraq are at a high level, and one of the objectives of the current (Iranian) administration is to forge and maintain friendly ties with neighbors”.
The Iranian president further noted that meetings have also been arranged with a number of heads of state aimed at improving Iran’s ties with neighboring countries.

Rouhani: Iran poses no threat to the world

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Islamic Republic of Iran poses no threat to the world and Tehran is ready for talks on its nuclear energy program with complete transparency. In his address to the UN, Rouhani said “Nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran’s security and defense doctrine, and contradict our fundamental religious and ethical convictions,” he then urged his US counterpart Barack Obama to reject “the short-sighted interest of warmongering pressure groups” if he wants “to manage differences” with Tehran.
On this connection, English Radio correspondent Mehdi Geramifard has interviewed Glyn Spark, a researcher with London-based Human Rights Commission as follows:

Iran ready for nuclear talks: Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Islamic Republic of Iran poses no threat to the world and Tehran is ready for talks on its nuclear energy program with complete transparency.

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Rouhani said the Iranian nation was ready for cooperation with the international community and all rational actors based on equal footing and mutual respect.
The Iranian president urged his US counterpart Barack Obama to reject “the short-sighted interest of warmongering pressure groups” if he wants “to manage differences” with Tehran.
Rouhani told the assembly that Iran poses “absolutely no threat to the world,” but it is a harbinger of peace and security in a region engulfed in chaos.
He said, “Nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran’s security and defense doctrine, and contradict our fundamental religious and ethical convictions”.
Rouhani stated that the Iranian nuclear energy program has always been a peaceful one, saying, “This has been, and will always be, the objective of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
The Iranian president slammed sanctions imposed against Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program as “violent” saying, “The negative impact is not nearly limited to the intended victims of sanctions.”
Rouhani added, It is “an illusion, and extremely unrealistic, to presume that the peaceful nature of the nuclear program of Iran could be ensured through impeding the program via illegitimate pressures”
He said the only way to resolve the nuclear issue is for the international community to respect Iran’s inalienable right to peaceful nuclear program.
Rouhani also condemned the use of militaristic approaches in dealing with global challenges, saying militarism of “some players” and generalization of western values poses a true danger to the world peace.
He also condemned drone attacks on “innocent people” and said they should be stopped.
Rouhani also said there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria and the use of force will only exacerbate the crisis.
He also warned that the greatest threat to the Middle East is the danger of chemical weapons falling into the hands of extremists and terrorist groups.
The Iranian president added that there is no violent solution to crises around the world and called for the creation of UN-sponsored plan called “The World against violence and Extremism.”
Rouhani spoke a few hours after Obama told the assembly that Washington prefers a diplomatic solution to its disputes with Iran, noting that the resolution of Iran’s nuclear issue can bring about a possible thaw in relations between the two countries.

Kerry welcomes Iran’s commitment

US Secretary of State John Kerry has welcomed Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif’s commitment to talks with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.

She added “We remain ready to work with Iran should President Hassan Rouhani’s administration choose to engage seriously.”
The Iranian foreign minister is set to meet with the foreign ministers from Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States on Thursday.
Zarif, who is on a visit to New York, also met with British Foreign Secretary William Hague on the sidelines of the 68th session of the UN General Assembly on Monday.
Hague expressed hope that constructive relations can be established between Iran and the West.
Hague said “There is a chance I think for improved relations with Iran because, if the statements of President Rouhani and Foreign Minister Zarif really mean something…then certainly there is a chance for us to improve relations and to work together across a whole range of subjects.”
